Recently I started a petition at change.org as another brazen effort to speak truth to power. As I have previously reported, the truth about wrongful convictions is disheartening, but everyday there are bold actors taking bold steps to exonerate the wrongfully convicted.
Whether as an activist, an attorney, an incarcerated soul, or a human being who sees the wrong being done to so many, there are no limitations to what we can change or do – except for the limitations that we put on ourselves.
I had the recent opportunity to participate in a webinar to learn all about the great work being done by the team at www.makinganexoneree.com, and I have to say that I came away impressed.
I also never miss an opportunity to listen to Crime & Justice Radio on Mondays with Bruce Barket and Aida Leisenring. There are also many podcasts and brave journalistic voices that I never tire of listening to or reading. Not everything has to do with wrongful convictions, but everything does have to do with justice on some level.
I am asking each and every one of you to please take a moment to sign this petition, not because you think I'm innocent but because personal ambition and corruption have no place in our criminal justice system. Joe Biden recently said, “We've got to prove democracy works.”
Something that we can't do when constitutional guarantees are only afforded to those with power, wealth, and privilege. Either we are a free nation of human diversity or we are not.
Either we govern ourselves through democracy and the rule of law, or we are a nation of indentured servants subjected to the whims of our less-than-benevolent corporate overlords and their puppet politicians. And if you will sign this, then maybe you'll be willing to go a little further.
The battle that I have embarked on is not one that I chose. It was forced upon me seventeen years ago when I was accused and convicted of a murder that I did not commit. The guilty parties and beneficiaries of this crime remain at large, well known but unaccused.
The fight before me is the struggle of an optimist who, despite all the evidence and known odds of success before him, believes that he could make it to the summit of Mt. Everest while dressed in a speedo with nothing more than flip-flops on his feet. Those are the dreadful odds that the wrongfully convicted face everyday; and I am no exception.
The justice system in this country is not what it should be, primarily because constitutional guarantees often take a back seat to prosecutorial ambition and corruption at the highest echelons of law enforcement and government.
